When your employees smoke, it affects your business. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoke breaks cost employers a loss of 240 hours per employee due to smoke breaks. In monetary terms, an employer loses $3,400 per year because of productivity loss and increased medical costs for an employee who uses tobacco. You can inspire each employee to quit smoking.

The Quit with AHEC provides free tobacco cessation services in your area. We are the “in-person” option with Tobacco Free Florida’s 3-ways to quit. We offer a two different programs for people who want to attend a face to face class: Tools to Quit and Quit Smoking Now.

The Tools to Quit program offers education on the health effects related to tobacco use, and most importantly, they teach the benefits of quitting and what to expect when quitting.  A Tobacco Cessation Specialist, or trained facilitator, guides participants as they identify triggers and withdrawal symptoms.  Our specialist will help participants brainstorm ways to cope with the quitting process.

Topics include:

  • Addiction, withdrawal, and medications that help
  • Planning for the “quit date”
  • Dealing with triggers
  • Overcoming cravings
  • Relapse prevention
  • The Tools to Quit program is a one-time 2 hour seminar in which participants receive information on how to select and prepare for their own quit date.

The Quit Smoking Now program offers similar information but over a six-week period. However, in the Quit Smoking Now program, participants meet in small groups and offer each other support.

Both programs offer free nicotine replacement therapy (while supplies last), educational materials, goodies for their quit day, and follow-up support. We like to have patients referred who are ready to quit within the next 30 days.
